Herja mine in Maramureș, Romania produced fine aesthetic Stibnite specimens for over a century and although the individual crystals can't compare with those from Japan and China, the presentation of stunning 'star-burst' sprays, and especially so on a white Calcite or Quartz background, still makes them world-class. At over 4 kg in weight this is clearly a very large display specimen, but it is in quite miraculous condition, making for a magnificent display. Forming a long Calcite-lined cavity the Stibnite sprays reach to 5 cm across, with individual dark steel-grey metallic bladed crystals to 3.2 cm in length. These crystals are mostly perfectly terminated with the exception of just a few, and all are enhanced by the partial coating of small (2 to 3 mm) lenticular white to cream coloured Calcite crystals. There is some bruising to greyish included Calcite along one side of the specimen, but this does not detract from the spectacular main cavities which are exceptional. From an older German-based collection this is one of the larger specimens of this European classic that you are likely to come across.
