It seems a little bizarre to say it, but despite the famous Morro Velho mine at Nova Lima, Iron Quadrangle, Minas Gerais, Brazil holding the record of the world's longest continuously producing gold mine, having first opened in 1725, mineral specimens of Native Gold from there are virtually unheard of. Indeed, to mineral collectors the mine is most famous for its exceptional Siderite crystals, most of which were collected during the 1960s and 1970s. All this reinforces the fact that this small cabinet-sized display specimen of leaf-like Native Gold, covering one side of a specimen of Siderite is super-rare and truly exceptional. The Native Gold can be seen to follow the contours of the rhombic, cleavage or crystal surfaces of the fudge-coloured Siderite.
