Native Silver specimens from the famous silver mining area around the town of Freiberg are always so prestigious because of their rarity, beauty and because of the history of this region, with the mines dating back to the 12th century. Small cabinet in size, this matrix-hosted wire Native Silver is richly covered in delicate silvery metallic wires twisted and knotted in 'nests' over a large part of the display surface. The wires show a lovely bright metallic lustre that really catches the eye but careful inspection reveals that they go much deeper, with hundreds of small wires continuing into the matrix like worms burrowing into the ground. The longest wires extend to about 1.5 cm in length and the overall richness of this Native Silver is quite impressive. A great German classic from one of Europe's most famous mining regions.
