Campylite, a variety of Mimetite, is synonymous in Britain with Dry Gill mine in the Caldbeck Fells of Cumbria, England. Collecting in the Caldbeck Fells has now been banned for about twenty-six years, but before this, to reach the mine high above Roughton Gill to the north and Carrock mine to the south, a very steep and strenuous hike was required. This large thumbnail is composed of numerous deep apricot, almost spherical, barrel-shapped crystal clusters intergrown over a characteristic matrix of sooty black 'wad', a mixture of manganese oxides, probably including Coronadite. Ex George Farr Collection.
