Chemically, one might think a hydrated sodium silicate hydroxide would be quite common, but there are only ten recorded occurrences of Makatite worldwide. Of those, Aris quarries, in Windhoek Rural, Khomas Region, Namibia have produced the finest crystallized specimens, as snow-white, finely acicular sprays and matted aggregates, most of which were found during the 1990s. This excellent miniature specimen from the superb systematic collection assembled by the brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) presents a 1.7 x 1.4 cm cavity in phonolite rock spanned by silky-white hair-like Makatite crystals. A very fine example of this very rare species.
