Quite different to what one normally expects for Epidote, the delicate fan-like radiating sprays of needle-like pistachio-green Epidote crystals from a mountainside exposure in Canta District, Canta Province, Peru are reminiscent of the quills on a Porcupine, but careful inspection reveals that they are thin blades, rather than acicular. Reaching to around 2.5 cm in length these crystal sprays are intergrown with small (5 mm), well-formed, sharp, bladed, brown Axinite-(Mn) crystals and many similar sized colourless narrow, 'needle' Quartz crystals. Originally discovered in about 2015, it is only recently (2024) that the aesthetic quality of specimens from this site has reached this level. This wonderful cabinet-sized display specimen is in exceptional condition and makes for a really showy display of this very different style of Epidote.
