There are epimorphs - casts of one mineral after an earlier dissolved mineral - and then there are epimorphs after itself! This bizarre epimorph after a superb cluster of large scalenohedral Calcite crystals is, either still Calcite with a shimmering pearlescent lustre or, perhaps, indicating that Dolomite might be involved too. Either way, although well-known from Cavnic, great, larger, cabinet-size display specimens in this quality are extremely rare. With a fantastic overall form, with great large radiating scalenohedra on the outside, and classic hollow crystals on the inside, this really is a very attractive piece. All of the mines at Cavnic had closed by 2008 and so the chances of new specimens appearing are very slim.
