Although Baryte is well-known to form wedge-shaped orthorhombic crystals, the style of these fudge-coloured, sharp-edged crystals is unique to the famous Clara mine in the Black Forest, Germany. Somewhat remarkably, Clara mine is best-known for its staggering array of secondary mineral species, many of which only occur in microcrystals, but the numbers make it one of the most mineralogically diverse places on Earth. However, its primary mineral assemblage, in larger, showy, well-formed crystals is equally impressive and this cabinet-sized Baryte from the Hettrich Collection in Germany is a really superb example and something rarely seen in this damage-free quality. The individual Baryte crystals reach to over 1.5 cm in length and are so distinctive as to make them a classic.
