For a country so famous for gem minerals Brazil only has a very small number of notable garnet occurrences meaning that when good garnet crystals are encountered they gain attention. This fine individual 1.6 cm wide deep burgundy-red Almandine garnet crystal in a very large miniature-sized pale cream-coloured matrix has no more detailed provenance than Minas Gerais state but certainly warrants further attention. It is quite rounded in its overall shape but does show classic rhombic dodecahedron faces, albeit with gently stepped surfaces producing the 'rounded' appearance. It is slightly chipped on one side but maintains a lovely rich colour and shape and stands out prominently alongside its paler coloured matrix.
