This miniature matrix specimen plays host to two monoclinic Whewellite crystals (1.9 and 1.8 cm in length) and comes from a discovery made in 1983, at Feldstrecke 1300, 435 Meter Level (Sohle), Upper Floor, Level 3, Shaft 396 at Paitzdorf mine near Ronneburg in Thuringia, Germany. Not only are these excellent crystals for this rare calcium oxalate species, but they are on matrix too. Additionally, the Whewellite crystals are dappled light to dark grey and brown, caused by inclusions of metallic Smythite, an iron nickel sulphide. Larger areas of inclusions reach the surface in one place on both crystals causing the surface of the crystal to be missing, but overall these crystals are really well formed and have sharp, well-defined edges.
