Mining operations continue apace across the DR Congo and the famous century-old Mashamba West mine in the Kolwezi mining district continues to produce exceptional mineralogical specimens, especially dramatic Malachite stalactites. This larger cabinet-sized display specimen has a rather organic feel to it, although equally it looks almost alien. Glistening, with a dark forest-green colour, the parallel stalactitic growths range from very rounded spherical forms, though more traditional stalactites, to finger-like pointed forms with rippled surfaces, all reaching slightly different lengths to produce an impressive natural artistic display. Normally, the assumption with stalactites is that the narrower tapering forms pointed downwards, whilst the wider, more bulging ones formed from the ground upwards, but this examples shows a little of both. The longest\/tallest stalactite has a slightly chipped tip on the rear side, but all of the other stalactites are perfectly free from damage on the top and present extremely well. Indeed, the only noticeable scuffs are two marks down one side edge, but overall it display extremely well. Underneath, the concentric banded internal layers of Malachite can been seen across the broken surface that forms the base of this piece.
