Known for some of the world's best specimens of Heterogenite the L'Etoile du Congo mine has been operating for over a century, but the best Heterogenite came out during the 1990s and again in the early 21st century. Not renowned as an especially pretty mineral, Heterogenite is a rare black cobalt oxide hydroxide, but when it is associated with blue-green Chrysocolla as clustered, berry-like, botryoidal aggregates its aesthetics are elevated to an entirely different level. This stunning larger display specimen not only has the texture and shimmering colour, but it also presents a scaly-surface texture. The outer layer of Chrysocolla varies from green to blue-green but translucent, allowing light to pass through and shimmer. Under magnification this appearance is stunning.
