AQUAMARINE","description":"The remote Adun-Cholon Range near Nerchinsk in Chitinskaya Oblast', Transbaikalia, Eastern Siberia, Russia was the world's first great source of gem Aquamarine, a blue variety of Beryl. Discovered during the 18th century, large quantities of gem crystals were transported from Nerchinsk to St. Petersburg from where they were sold to wealthy, usually aristocratic collectors across western Europe. Fine examples can still be seen in most major historic museum collections, but even these usually only reach about 10 to 12 cm in length. At 19.6 cm, this rich blue Aquamarine crystal is truly colossal and certainly from a very old and important collection. Its full historic details are not recorded, but a crystal of this stature would have been in a major collection at some point. Terminated with a typical flat, glassy, pinacoid face, the crystal shows excellent translucency throughout, responding well to back, or side lighting. Recorded as having some restoration to improve its overall appearance its broadly hexagonal prism sides are complete down most of its length, with a small area lower down on one side where its edge is recessed slightly.
