Miniature in size, the Acanthite crystals are incredibly prominent forming stacked, repeatedly twinned octahedral crystals, displaying a metallic grey appearance. Acanthite is technically monoclinic (bladed) in form but its polymorph Argentite is isometric (cubic). However, Argentite does not exist at below 177 C at atmospheric pressure - the internal form being replaced, or pseudomorphed, perfectly by Acanthite. The largest crystal here measures an impressive 1 cm across and in combination with the others forms an arborescent array in several crystal branches. It is from the important historic silver-mining district of Freiberg in Saxony, Germany. A stunning miniature specimen of rich silver ore with fine crystals. A green Richard W. The addition of bromine modifies the composition to Ag(Cl,Br) and gives the framboidal crystalline structure a pale yellowish-green hue and waxy lustre. This specimen, from Block 14 of the Broken Hill Proprietary mine in New South Wales, Australia, is composed entirely of 'Embolite', which forms an open, porous, sponge-like rigid mass. Such halide minerals are light sensitive and on prolonged exposure to light, become blackened and opaque. The upper surface of this specimen is such an example and appears as a mass of sooty-dark grey stalagmitic framboids. The underside, however, has been largely protected from light and has, therefore, remained mainly pale yellow-green. Although admittedly hard to find, this specimen also has some very fine clusters of the equally rare silver-arsenic sulphosalt, Xanthoconite, as yellow-orange and light tan equant well-developed crystals. Cinnabar does occur on the specimen but is indistinct and difficult to clearly identify. Save for the Proustite, all other crystals are micro and require the use of a stereo microscope to see. This somewhat discrete-looking large miniature to very small cabinet specimen appears to be an amazing survivor from one of these early collections. Ex Martin Bohaty Collection, it is accompanied by two collection labels, neither of which appear to be of significant age. However, one mentions Windschaht Štiavnické Bane, which suggests that it might relate to one of the ancient workings at Štiavnické Bane a few miles from Banská Štiavnica. To the specimen itself, it is a small section of veinstone dominated by finely intergrown Sphalerite and Quartz with minor microscopic spots of Chalcopyrite and perhaps one sprig of Native Gold. However, as previously labelled, the main focal point is an open Quartz crystal-lined vug within which sit a stacked cluster of five of six dull dark grey rounded equant Acanthite crystals (presumably pseudomorphous after Argentite) individually to 7 or 8 mm across and with a few tarnished golden Pyrite crystals on top. The 'Acanthite' crystals vary from pseudocubic, to rounded, but the largest is pseudohexagonal in outline and may perhaps be Stephanite instead. This fine specimen is from the Yangshuo mine in Yangshuo County, Guilin Prefecture, within the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China. Yangshuo mine works a hydrothermal lead-zinc deposit, hosted in limestone, sandstone and shale of the Devonian Wuzhishan formation which are locally intruded by granite and some lamprophyre dykes. The Plumbogummite forms a smoky, blue to light sage green replacement over the chunky Pyromorphite crystals, showing the initial stage in the process of pseudomorph replacement. This occurs as a piecemeal process whereby each atom is individually replaced, gradually altering the Pyromorphite (lead phosphate chloride) to Plumbogummite (hydrated lead aluminium phosphate).","brand":"Crystal Classics","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57780494893391,"sku":"CC11833","price":1110.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1011\/3748\/2063\/files\/CC11833_1ca39bfc-8280-4888-900f-852382bbf7e1.jpg?v=1783968942"},{"product_id":"bustamite-with-galena","title":"BUSTAMITE with GALENA","description":"Bustamite was one of the principal manganese silicate minerals at Broken Hill where it occurred in several of the mines in worldclass crystals. The Pyrargyrite crystals are tarnished to a characteristic silver-grey, but if strongly back-lit, it is possible the true blood red colour might become apparent. Surrounding the Pyrargyrite crystals is a dense druse of greenish-tan to biscuit-tan micro-crystals of Smithsonite. This will make a superb addition to any Broken Hill collection.","brand":"Crystal Classics","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57780664402255,"sku":"CC13049","price":2591.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1011\/3748\/2063\/files\/CC13049_f0163f11-c4ea-45c7-89e8-673657d825d2.jpg?v=1783969874"},{"product_id":"alabandite-on-calcite","title":"ALABANDITE on CALCITE","description":"Alabandite is a rare manganese sulphide and is one of the iconic minerals from the Zinc Corporation mine at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. The Alabandite forms a pencil-like rod measuring approximately 5.2 x 0.7 x 0.7 cm of bundled, sooty-black acicular crystals. These contrast nicely against the bubbly, flesh-pink botryoidal Calcite on which they rest, this in turn covering a light grey fine granular matrix. A terrific example of Alabandite and of unusual habit from Broken Hill.
