It presents the iconic wafer-thin leaf-gold style of Native Gold for which this region is famed from the very earliest days of mineral collecting. Small (3 to 4 mm) papery thin leaves of exceptionally bright golden metallic Native Gold interlock to form a beautiful 2.8 x 1.5 cm 'island' raised up upon one side of the display face of a porous white Quartz vein which is itself attached to a siliceous rock matrix disseminated with Sphalerite and Pyrite. The Native Gold crystals are delicate but undamaged and have some tiny white needle-like Quartz microcrystals rising up amongst them. It is stunning under magnification. Its provenance is from the 450 Level at Boldut mine, indicating that perhaps this is a more modern piece rather than a centuries-old specimen, but it is nevertheless a perfect example of the classic form of Native Gold from this famous eastern European area, and at a respectable price. Although the provenance of this splendid Native Gold on micro-crystallized limestone is unknown, careful consideration does suggest Transylvania. Crystallized Native Gold from there has been known since Roman times, but most specimens seen in collections date to the 18th and 19th centuries when it was part of the Hungarian Empire. The Native Gold on this specimen forms folded stippled sheets interlaced with one another, often with hackly edges and variations in lustre between semi-metallic and brightly reflective. It covers an area of 3.8 cm by up to 1.4 cm wide on a mid-grey crystalline limestone matrix with a surface coating of sub-millimetre light grey Calcite crystals. Often originally labelled as from Hungary, or Transylvania, collectors sent out requests to source the very best display specimens showing bright yellow 'leaves' of Native Gold rising upwards from their vein Quartz host. Even 250 years ago specimens were being bought for extravagant sums such is their beauty and richness. Obviously, in the intervening years many new occurrences of crystallized Native Gold have been made around the world, but the Romanian gold's will always be the classic and with their characteristic leaf form and distinctive matrix they are unique. This small cabinet-sized display specimen is incredibly rich, with countless leaf-like crystals of bright Native Gold rising up across the finely crystallized surface of a white Quartz vein with some pieces of Quartz dangling on the ends of the sheets of gold. This vein cuts across one side of a quite blocky pale buff-grey siliceous (probably rhyolitic) matrix as is typical of the Roşia Montană occurrence. First worked by the Romans, this gold mining area is probably one of the most ancient of all that can still be traced. Ex Hans Engelbrecht Collection, no. 673. Also spelt Beryozovsky, this locality is famous as the type locality of Crocoite. The mixture of minerals in this milky-white Quartz veinstone is complex and picking out individual species requires careful study and assistance from either a lens or low power microscope. The Aikinite occurs as small black acicular crystals intergrown with dark grey Galena, milky Quartz, Native Gold and probable Chalcopyrite. The Aikinite forms crystals to a few mm long and in one spot the crystals cross one another in a reticulated habit. The Native Gold if well distributed throughout the specimen as bright buttery-gold blebs and specks, quite distinct from the pale golden sulphides present. First described from an obscure occurrence in Kazakhstan in the 1830s, it was the finds made at a gold mine at Botești in Romania in 1875 which have defined this unusual species. Infact, finding a well-defined Hessite crystal visible to the naked eye from anywhere other than Botești is almost impossible. This triangular-shaped large miniature specimen features an exceptionally large (2.2 cm long) Hessite crystal on Quartz veinstone matrix, but equally important is its heritage, with a suite of old collection labels. Its most recent label is from Dr Werner Paar (collection no. 1424) but also has a label from the famous Austrian collector Johann Isidor Weinberger (1838-1915) with his typed number label affixed to the back of the specimen. It also has what looks to be an even older handwritten label with it and also a very old and detailed handwritten label affixed to it. The Hessite is crystallized as classic rounded 'molten' dark-grey resinous to submetallic crystals and elongated blades with rounded edges. These crystals sit upon a bed of terminated Quartz crystals cutting through a thin layer of pale grey rock matrix. The largest bladed Hessite crystal is almost freestanding, but at a shallow angle across the surface of the Quartz with an attachment to a the tip of a Quartz crystal near to its own termination. The most recent label mentions Native Gold in association with the Hessite which we have not been able to confirm visually, but it may well have been identified optically as fine inclusions within the Hessite. This specimen sits naturally for display in an upright position, with the main Hessite crystal pointing upwards.","brand":"Crystal Classics","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57781171552591,"sku":"CC25624","price":12953.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1011\/3748\/2063\/files\/CC25624.png?v=1779752751"},{"product_id":"native-gold-64","title":"NATIVE GOLD","description":"Native Gold from Roşia Montană in Alba, Romania has such a distinctive appearance when on matrix and has been much sought after in collections for centuries. In those long gone days the site was not off-limit as it is today and I could happily have collected each and everyday. Oh for a time machine! I think most collectors are familiar with Hope's Nose Gold, occurring in wonderfully aesthetic dendritic and arborescent fronds, draped over pale pink and cream etched Calcite. The Gold occurs 'frozen' within the calcite veins and so judicious acid etching is essential to expose the Gold. This miniature is a stunning example and rather unusual in that the Native Gold fronds form an exquisite 1.5 x 1 cm ball or knot of the precious metal at one end of the Calcite matrix.
