BROMIAN CHLORARGYRITE (aka EMBOLITE)","description":"The name Embolite is frequently given to the bromine-rich variety of Chlorargyrite, AgCl, a silver chloride. The addition of bromine modifies the composition to Ag(Cl,Br) and gives the framboidal crystalline structure a pale yellowish-green hue and waxy lustre. This specimen, from Block 14 of the Broken Hill Proprietary mine in New South Wales, Australia, is composed entirely of 'Embolite', which forms an open, porous, sponge-like rigid mass. Such halide minerals are light sensitive and on prolonged exposure to light, become blackened and opaque. The upper surface of this specimen is such an example and appears as a mass of sooty-dark grey stalagmitic framboids. The underside, however, has been largely protected from light and has, therefore, remained mainly pale yellow-green. This specimen is best kept in a light-proof box or drawer to maintain its natural colour and composition. It's a superb example of this classic mineral from Broken Hill. BOULDER OPAL in IRONSTONE","description":"A stunning specimen of the Opal variety known as 'Boulder Opal' from one of the less well-known Australian opal localities of Quilpie in southern Queensland, Australia. The siliceous ironstone matrix varies from milk chocolate to dark chocolate-brown and is part of a larger concretion which has fractured internally at some stage of its formation, similar to a septarian nodule. In this case, the fracture filling has been a colloidal silicate gel leading to the formation of Opal. The specimen has been sawn to form a base and is highly polished on all faces. The display face is a spectacular network of polygonal facture infillings of electric blue and green Opal with a major opalized area of approximately 6.5 x 4 cm. The Opal is predominantly vivid shades of blue, mauve, violet and green, but shows occasional bright flashes of orange-red. A thoroughly excellent example of 'Boulder Opal' from Queensland and of high-end museum quality. Such specimens very seldom appear for sale and are unusual even in good private and museum Broken Hill collections. Three Anglesite crystals of up to almost 5 mm sit is an approximate line across the matrix, all with a bright glassy lustre and fine, micro-striated crystal faces. The crystals are completely transparent and although small, leap out due to their startling colour shown to maximum advantage on the dark Goethite. I say small, but for this variety of green Anglesite, they are probably about as big as they come; it is one of those minerals which appears to have a size limitation!
