ex. Keith Hammond Collection
A rich scattering of well formed Bornite crystals on Calcite, from the Dzhezkazgan area in Kazakhstan (probably from the Dzhezkagan Mine). The crystals of Bornite measure to 0.9cm, and have the characteristic slightly metallic blueish tarnish. The Bornites are well formed, a few crystals are pseudo-octahedral in aspect, others display a more complex combination of faces giving them a rounded form. Scalenohedral crystals of Calcite form the host on which the Bornite crystals have developed. The Calcite crystals measure to 3cm long, translucent white with dark spots of Bornite inclusions. All have grown on the matrix of rounded Quartz rich grains cemented by Bornite. The Copper deposits at Dzhezkazgan are reputed to have been known since the time of Jenghiz Khan in the 13th century.
